It's quite simple what should be done.

You allow the chips to fall where they may and then you step in to give a hand to those who deserve it.

Let all the overvalued assets held by lenders be sold off and then step in and buy them at their true value, or rent them from those who have bought them at their true value.

You say to those buying residential property at auction that you will lease the property for ten years at a rate commensurate with sale price on the basis that they don't demand vacant possession where there is a mortgagor in possession.

That underpins the price and if the mortgagor can't pay his debts, (s)he at least has a roof over her/his head at modest cost.

The big losers would then be the corporations and the creditors -- including the CEOs, who would be behind the IRS in the creditors' queue.

The taxpayer doesn't end up putting toxic debt onto the books. The money the government has kept back can buy any assets that are valuable *at their true value*.

Re: our HS social order -- I have always appreciated the absence of what I perceive as Major Amounts of Stupid. I loved the fact that we had great athletes (some of them quite attractive!) in band who also happened to be at the top of the class, and so on and so forth. We were in HS before the whole "Mean Girls" thing, but I can say that I don't remember observing any stereotypical cliques full of unkind, back-stabbing girls. Atypical, indeed -- or are we just so used to seeing that sort of trope in the media that we take it for granted that they exist, when in reality they are actually, maybe, not the norm? At any rate, I can also say that I've never really thought about applying social theory to my experiences at CK, but I'm impressed that you've done so. I hope you write some more on the subject; it's interesting.

I new from the beginning that Obama was a fraud.I will not vote for him. And how can you say that Obama is better then Mccain? Listen to what he says. he has and will say anything to get elected. everything he accused clinton of doing,he did. he is a big phoney. i am also frusted with the democrates in congress. This isn't the same democratic party I have supported all these years. Obama will destroy this country.

You are clearly a talented linguist. Sadly, life is too short to learn all the languages on the face of the earth. Have you ever learned any Esperanto? I'd be interested in your view of this planned international language. Take a look at http://www.esperanto.net What do you think?

The post of VP has morphed in the last 16 years to one much more powerful and less symbolic. However, the traditional notion that the VP is a strong doorway to the presidency has been challenged in the modern history. You are correct VP may be a consolation prize for aggrieved Hillary supporters but it does her no good. Obama has already taken the initial steps towards unity and the next crucial steps need to come from Hillary. The agenda she laid out last night can as easily be pursued in the Senate as they can from the White House, arguably much easier. Ensuring strong momentum among democrats to increase House and Senate seats is crucial and perhaps for me one of the enduring strengths of Obama. His endorsement by many politicians reflect this reality. Hillary can do well in the Senate or Governor's seat in NY - two positions from which she can stage another run for the presidency should she choose to do it. Her future is bright and the options are endless. The best impact I see her having is on shaping the platform and aiding in selecting a running mate. Thanks for sharing Jeremy. Did not know that you had a regular blog. Would visit more often.

I disagree, of course, with most of this. The one thing I will comment on is that my point is precisely that "we" aren't fighting for the same things - there is no "we." And if there is something that "I" am fighting for - for which purpose I identify with others as "queer" - it is much greater and other than simply "for people to have the freedom to live their lives the way they want to." That sort of liberal individuality is just not a sufficient vision of social life for me.

Its all worth all time. The little things and the big things. You can't stop the world. Shit will happen, and its not because those guys who "want the blender" somehow allowed it. I think you're being very bitter and if you stepped back perhaps for a second you'd realize that even if this isn't your "ideal" lifestyle, this is a lifestyle, and what we're fighting for is for people to have the freedom to live their lives the way they want to.
