- UPDATE: May 19, 2008 – Read an article in the New York Times that, in part, profiles Trinity and Heidi Neumark.
- UPDATE: March 2008 – Read an article about Trinity’s shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth.
For the past 5 years, I have had the profound joy – first as a staff member, now as sojourning advocate – of being a part of the most remarkable Christian community I have ever encountered. Spurred by the humble-yet-inspiring leadership of the Rev. Heidi Neumark, Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan is a life-changing, justice-making, grace-infusing congregation dedicated to embodying the Good News in every way. TRINITY is
- not afraid to talk about issues of injustice in the world (including racism, sexism, poverty, homelessness, unjust war) AND not afraid to enact God’s promise of reconciliation in light of this injustice;
- intentionally engaged in including people of many races, ethnicities, ages, cultures;
- upholding the often-marginalized gifts, vision, and needs of women and children;
- continually making spaces for poor people and wealthy people to work together for justice;
- a ministry of empowerment, education, and outreach for undocumented immigrants;
- an assembly that regularly worships in both English and Spanish (and sometimes more languages);
- a church that fully includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in every aspect of its life;
- sustaining a transitional shelter for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth;
- AND STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE WITH A 100-YEAR-OLD BUILDING.
If any of these qualities are part of a society that you want to live in and leave for the next generation, please consider making a donation to the operating budget of Trinity Lutheran Church. The most direct way to support Trinity is to send a check to
